Installing an Emoji keyboard on Android 4.2 or below
If you are using Android 4.2 or below, you can use the following instructions to install Emoji and an Emoji keyboard on your device.

The steps to get it setup are a bit time consuming, so allow yourself about 10 minutes to complete this tutorial.
Note - I did not create either of the apps listed in this tutorial, and all support for their setup and installation should go to the respective developer.
Also, while I didn’t have any issues at all with the apps below, and they are well ranked, I will not be responsible if you experience any issues as a result of installation. This guide is from my personal experience only.
If you don’t have time to install the following apps - or aren’t prepared to give that level or permission just to get Emoji - you can also view all Emoji now <- this loads in Chrome where you can copy/paste Emoji of your choice, without any apps.
On with the instructions!
1. Download and install Handcent Emoji Plugin on your device. Free!
This installs the relevant Emoji characters on your device. Note: you need to keep going with the next steps to enable the keyboard!
2. Download and install Kii Keyboard from Google Play
3. Open Kii Keyboard settings from your list of applications
4. Instructions will appear. Tap “Enable Emoji Keyboard”, “Next” on the notice, then “OK” on the keyboard warning (all keyboards on Android are required to say this)
5. Now you should see Kii Keyboard enabled alongside any other keyboards you have

6. Press the Back key to continue the Kii Keyboard Setup
7. Tap “Set Kii Keyboard to Default”
8. Tap the Kii Keyboard option
9. Just about done! You can now press the Home button to go home, and then open any app to test - such as Twitter.
10. On the Keyboard, press and hold the Numbers key in the bottom-left
11. Drag your finger over to the Smiling Emoji in the bottom-right and then release
12. Here it is - your Emoji Keyboard for Android:
13. Note that even though the icons here look just like the Apple Icons, when you actually use them they will appear in black and white in Android styling:
14. If all this was too difficult, you can instead to to Get Emoji in Chrome. It will look like this if your device is supported - just copy and paste:

If you are using an older version of Android and want to know what an Emoji you have been sent is, just copy and paste the ‘box’ that you see into Emojipedia and it will tell you what you are missing.
