Download Manager for Windows Phone. Windows Phone (successor to Windows Mobile) is a smartphone OS developed by Microsoft and was made to be a strong. Files is a free app for managing files on your Windows Phone. By using this app you can:. Access files stored on your phone and SD card. Browse, search and launch files. Easily share one file or multiple files. Create folders to organise your files. Copy, move, rename and delete files. As for the file manager, it can be downloaded from the Windows store only if you have Windows 8.1 Developer Preview version installed. The file manager is simply called Files and it can access internal memory files as well as Micro SD card data. You can remove, delete, browse, search, create and share multiple files.

With the introduction of Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft allowed developers the access to a lot more APIs which finally made it possible to develop a functional File Manager for Windows Phone. So, if you’re running Windows Phone 8.1 or later on your Mobile Phone (most probably a Nokia Lumia), you can make use of these File Managers to manage files on your SD card (phone memory still isn’t properly supported).

1. Files

Files is Microsoft’s own File Manager app for Windows Phone. It provides access to the basic and important file management tasks such as browsing the directories, copying, moving, deleting and renaming files. Those who like to keep everything organized will also like it as it also makes it easy to create new folders and directories. Some of the other features include:

• Sharing files via various sharing options available.
  • Share multiple files at once. A full folder can be shared too.
  • Open and browse contents of zipped files.
  • File and Folder properties
Developer: ?Microsoft Corporation?

2. Pocket File Manager

Pocket File Manager is one of the most functional, fast and smooth File Manager for Windows Phone. Besides the basic tasks of copying and moving files, Pocket File Manager offers a host of other functionality such as:

  • Connecting to a FTP server and copying/moving files
  • Sharing via HTTP
  • Extracting archives such as zip, rar, 7zip and tar
  • Compress files together to a zip
  • Set custom music files as Ringtone
  • Pin files and folders to the start screen for easy access
  • Detailed folder information to find the number of files of a certain type
  • Edit ID3 tags of Mp3 files to edit artist and other properties
  • Download Manager to download files (requires direct link)
  • Supports connecting with cloud services such as Onedrive, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, Copy and Yandex Disk

All this however comes at a price. Pocket File Manager costs $1.99 in the US Windows Phone Store, but I believe the price perfectly justifies the amount of functionality it offers. A trial version is available, but it lacks access to many options and can be frustrating at times.

3. Aerize Explorer Pro

Windows

Aerize Explorer is also one of the well developed File Managers. It is as advanced as the pocket file manger, but it is at a slower side. It takes some time to load the directories and list the files especially when the number of files in a directory is large. Some of its amazing features include:

  • Browsing directories to copy, move and rename files
  • Extract zip, rar and 7z archives
  • Compress files together to a zip
  • Padlock Security which requires a password before allowing access to file management functions
  • Pin files and folders to the start screen for easy access

A free version of Aerize Explorer is available, but a lot of functionality is locked down including the Padlock Security.

Developer: ?Aerize.?

Some of you were looking for file managers for Windows Phone 8.1, so a couple of developers have quickly delivered. These file managers let you access your Documents, Downloads, and other user folders. You can essentially read, copy, and move files.

The two apps that we’re looking at are Aerize Explorer and Pocket Explorer. They share similar features with a few differences. Both apps are currently works in progress but can already be downloaded from the Windows Phone Store.

Aerize Explorer

Aerize lets you manage your files, folders, and storage cards. It is the first file manager for Windows Phone that can read and write files and folders to storage cards and the device file system. This means you can easily move files and folders between your device and microSD card.

Like we mentioned before, Aerize Explorer is still a work in progress. We’re not fans of the current design. It gets things done, but it’s not pretty. For example, the file location address and time stamp are displayed underneath file and folder names. We think these can be omitted or perhaps displayed in a better way.

Aerize Explorer is a free download from the Windows Phone Store. The developers are listening to your feedback and are responding quickly to requests. Head over to the forums to follow the conversation.

Pocket Explorer

Pocket Explorer also lets you Read, Copy, and Move files around, but we like the design better than Aerize. It looks clean and gets bonus points for integrating your phone’s accent color.

A feature we really like on Pocket Explorer is the ability to pin user files and folders. For example, I have my bus schedule in pdf format pinned to the home screen.

Pocket Explorer is free to try with the purchase option for $1.99 at the Windows Phone Store. It’s currently in beta, but we’re really happy with it so far.

You should install both of these file managers on your Windows Phone 8.1 devices with Preview for Developers. You’ll see more improvements in the coming weeks as both developers continue to iron things out. Which file manager do you prefer so far? Let us know in the comments!
